Starry Night Tin Punching

Standard

A while ago we spent an evening making some tin punched lanterns which harked back to my Girl Guide days.

First you take an empty, washed food can and fill it with water.  Place this in the freezer to set, this makes it easier to punch the aluminium.

Once frozen, using a nail and a small hammer, punch some holes, we made some starry night and hearts designs and then left the can out for the ice to melt.

Tip the ice/water out, add a small candle and a wire handle and there you have it.

A fun craft to do with your kids too! Have fun!

(Please make sure you never leave a burning candle unattended and don’t forget the metal/wire handle may become hot to the touch from the heat of the candle!)

Halen Mor

Standard

I have just recently created a set of lanterns for Halen Mor restaurant on Milford Haven marina, Pembrokeshire.  If you are ever in the area it is well worth a visit.  Halen Mor means sea salt in Welsh and we recently enjoyed a feast of Greek-inspired food at one of their very popular ‘taster nights’

Blue Monday

Standard

So I’m confused, was it today or last Monday?  Either way ‘blue Monday’ is considered to be most miserable day in the calendar year.  The day started fair here but then the clouds gathered and before I knew it the lights were on as it was so dark and dismal; so much so, I considered cake.  To be fair I did more than consider it…  I found some walnut loaf cake and scoffed it with a coffee marvelling at how quickly the sky had changed (I do like a bit of coffee and walnut).

A wonderful photographer I have known since we were kids took some amazing pictures at the start of the year as the waves battered my home county, Pembrokeshire.  She manages to capture the changing sky beautifully.  The first picture is of Broad Haven’s front taking a complete hammering from the sea –

Newgale in particular was very badly hit and so a beach clean up has been arranged, if you are free and in the area, they’d appreciate the help –

Halloween is a hoot!

Standard

“Black is black, green is green, anything for Halloween?”

Anyone remember that one or are you all ‘trick or treaters’?  I’m probably showing my age here, but as kids, we had never heard of trick or treating.  We would dress up in a black leotard and tights and draw the skeleton bones onto the fabric with chalk, or throw a sheet over our heads and get into trouble for cutting holes in it for eyes – eek!  Then we’d go from door to door and collect money, not sweets.  Strange how things change isn’t it?  I still love this time of year though, dressing up, carving pumkins, or swedes back in the day (they smelt bad!) and scaring the living daylights out of each other.

If you’re looking for something different to mark the event, take a look at my Halloween skulls lantern –

Olympic Glory and Atos (now there’s a mix!)

Standard

I’m sure I can’t be the only one who has been inspired by the athletes at the Olympics.  I’d posted on Facebook how I sincerely hope my little girl is inspired by the women athletes in TeamGB, rather than the bubble-heads gracing our mainstream media on a daily basis.  It appears I am not alone in my sentiments as many people agreed with them and then I found this

Did anyone see the Dispatches programme regarding Atos and the DWP and their screening process for social security sickness benefits?  http://www.channel4.com/programmes/dispatches/articles/britain-on-the-sick-clips

I have one word – horrified – but sadly not surprised.

I have been through the appeal process and it is demoralising, worrying and downright depressing – as the Dr involved in the training of new doctors at Atos points out the benefit was designed to get people off benefits…  What a sorry state indeed, let’s not tax the bankers but take benefits from those in society who really need it – great logic!  If you are interested in reading more, I found this

So here it is…

Standard

Hello!

So here it is, my very first blog in honour of reaching the magnificent 500 ‘likes’ on Facebook.  Having almost shifted the dreaded lurgy, it’s time for a giveaway to say a great big thank-you.

As the sun has put in appearance (for most of us) I thought what better way to celebrate than to send a ‘Butterfly Flyby’ hand-punched copper lantern on its way to a new home?  It’s really easy to enter, all you have to do is like and share the Facebook link (www.facebook.com/coppercreations) to this blog.  I’ll randomly select a winner on Sunday 29th July at 8pm and the butterflies will be winging their way to you on Monday 30th July.

Thank you all again

Elaine

In line with the ‘rules’ by ‘the powers that be’ at Facebook, please note this giveaway has got absolutely nothing to do with Facebook ;0)
